The Skein Attraction was opened in late February, 2006. The owners are Shaina, Adina, and Julie Friedman. Julie has been a knitter, weaver, spinner, dyer, and fiber artist since she was around her daughter's ages. At that time, owning a yarn shop was no more than a dream as she tooled off in her red VW bug into the Wisconsin sunset wearing really, really big sunglasses.
Julie taught at a yarn shop in Milwaukee for a while and was a weaver for hire and a full-time mom of three children. Then, they moved East. Real life took over and she forgot the wistful dreams of her twenty-something shadow. Her kids grew up. Julie taught the two girls how to knit. Adina played with shapes, cable stitches, lace, and funky color designs long before Shaina was past the beauty of Stockinette Stitch. They felted and felted and then they made socks and hats. Then the girls took the plunge into sweaters and afghans. Shaina started collecting vintage knitting patterns. From there, she made some bulky-knit coats that her mom probably would have worn as she walked her beagle during those chilly Wisconsin mornings.
Shaina took a part-time job in a yarn shop while she was in college and kept trying new techniques and attempting to decode the mysteries of sweater design. After teaching 8 of 24 classmates during a semester in England, Shaina got the confidence to teach more than just her peers. She began teaching near home and continued working at yarn shops, always enjoying the people she was meeting. Fate brought Shaina down to the New Jersey Shore one summer when Wooly Monmouth was opening in Red Bank. Shaina stumbled in and found herself a new job. The owner, another young energetic woman, inspired Shaina to consider opening a yarn shop of her own. Shaina brought the idea back to her family. Adina’s ears perked up and she offered to design the website even though she had never designed one before. Shaina and Julie took some business classes at the Small Business Development Center in Hackensack, because while Adina may jump in with both feet, Julie likes to dip her feet in first. Before The Skein Attraction opened, Shaina continued working with Dori of Wooly Monmouth developing her own color and fashion sense, pattern writing skills, and customer service style. Shaina became a Craft Yarn Council of America Certified Knitting Instructor.
After weeks of long discussions and “what if’sâ€, The Skein Attraction was born.
