It all began in 2004 with our brick and mortar shop “In the Making”, located in Birmingham, Alabama. Originally a crafter’s workshop, where folks could gather and use the facilities for crafting and creating, In the Making quickly became a full service knit shop.

We carry a variety of fibers ranging from the very basics in cotton and wool to the most luxurious of fibers. Cashmere, silk, Seacell (natural kelp fiber), sequin & beaded to name just a few. Our pattern collection supports the yarns we carry: Noni for felting, SKIF hand-knit for a new way of knitting, Pure & Simple for the basics, Roo Designs for whismy charted children’s garments, Stitch Diva, French Girl, Be Sweet and many many more! We have a large selection of doodads, straights, double points and circulars in every size. And for those of you who just don’t have enough bags, our collection of project bags are ever expanding. From blocking to complete garment construction, we are here to help you complete your projects.

After numerous requests from customers for an online store, shopknits.com was born! We learned that our retail customer wanted their far away friends and family members to share in a similar experience. Because of this, we have designed our website to treat you as though you were standing right in the shop. We’ll share our ideas, make suggestions for substituting yarns, and we’ll even share our most popular house patterns, at no charge. Need help constructing a finished garment, send it to us and we’ll stitch it right up! If your purchase is a gift for someone and you need it wrapped, just let us know! If you are buying a gift card, we’ll wrap it automatically, unless you tell us otherwise. Need your yarn wound? It’s our pleasure and it’s free!
