Knit Wits has been family owned and operated for over 30 years. It was started in 1970 by two sisters, Babe Proesch and Elsie Tucker.

Babe and Elsie had worked together for many years in a grocery store that their husbands owned. They both had dabbled in needlework, knitting and crocheting, but were not always able to get what they wanted without special ordering it. So, they went into business for themselves.

They eventually opened two other stores. One in Nampa at Karcher Mall, and another one in Boise at Vista Village Shopping Center. During these prime years, knit Wits was the largest shop in Idaho, and among the top ten across the United States.

Over the years, Babe and Elsie have employed numerous family members. Their two younger sisters both worked while going to school. Later a few nieces, and now a granddaughter, have joined the team. We are on our third generation of Knit Wits! One very special lady went to work for Babe and Elsie shortly after they opened; Lera Westenskow was a loyal employee, friend and part of our own family for over 30 years. She is greatly missed by us and our customers.

As busy as they were with three stores to run they always tried to have people available to help with problems and questions. Customer service was, and still is at the top of our list.

Elsie retired in 1986, but she still enjoys knitting, crocheting, and cross-stitch. Babe still runs the shop, she says she will quit when it’s not fun anymore.
