Suzanne Middlebrooks received her B.S. degree in textiles at the University of Texas. Soon after graduating, she entered a traditional retail work environment as a buyer at a large department store in San Antonio, Texas. She started weaving as a hobby while in San Antonio. She began getting requests from family and friends for custom pieces and commissions and in 1975 began to sell her works at national craft fairs. In 1979, Suzanne moved to Austin, Texas and joined a fiber co-op, "Dreams into Reality" and met her business partner and fellow weaver, Martha Shannon. The two women opened their first retail business, a 500 square foot store near the University of Texas that was primarily devoted to weaving, hence the name, Hill Country Weavers. They offered weaving classes and had a small gallery but quickly expanded as a response to the local knitters in Austin. By 1981, Suzanne had retaught herself to knit, moved to a new and larger location at 12th and Lamar, and expanded her product line and services to include weaving, knitting and basketry.
