Headband with Cabled Braid
Headband with Cabled Braid

My gift to the list is a headband with a cabled braid. Someone asked for a headband pattern, so I'm obliging. There isn't much to it - but it is mine ... with all due credit to a stitch pattern from Barbara Walker #2 (Elongated Five-Rib Braid).
Materials:
I used one skein (avg yardage) of DK weight, although YMMV, with #5 needles, or what looks good.

Abbreviations:
CN: Cable Needle

FC - Front Cross - slip 3 sts to CN, hold in front, K2, then slip the purl st back to left needle, P1, then K2 from CN

BC - Back Cross - slip 3 sts to CN, hold in back, K2, then slip the purl st back to left needle, P1, then K2 from CN

Pattern:
Cast on 22 stitches with waste yarn. Switch to good yarn, and repeat rows
1-10 until measures about 20". Block (I used wires), then graft (kitchener) invisible seam, remove waste yarn. The grafting is a little tricky, because some is purl, some garter, and some stockinette. Or just sew it together, and call it the back!

Rows 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 (odd rows are wrong side): K4, P14, K4

Row 2: K2, P2, *(K2, P1)* 4 times, K2, P2, K2

Row 4: K2, P2, K2, *(P1, FC)* twice, P2, K2

Row 6: K2, P2, *(K2, P1)* 4 times, K2, P2, K2

Row 8: K2, P2, *(BC, P1)* twice, K2, P2, K2

Row 10: K2, P2, *(K2, P1)* 4 times, K2, P2, K2
