When I first opened my business in November 1989, I wanted to create a very charming, clever, and meaningful name. I called my store “Tricots”, from the French word “tricot” meaning knitting. Throughout the years I battled with this name. People simply did not understand what that name stood for; some thought that I sold fabric for sewing undergarments, and others thought that my business had to do with electricity! After several years and much confusion, I expressed my concern to my friend Donna, who was working with me at that time. We started brainstorming to come up with some new ideas. We would write down our fresh insights and sleep on them. We came up with literally hundreds of new names. Donna suggested that the store name should reflect my home, which is Prague, in the Czech Republic. “Moldau?” I asked (this is the river that flows through the heart of Prague). It didn’t fit! River Knitters (after the road where the store is located) also was not exciting. After a week or so, Donna suggested “Ewe”. I thought she meant “you”, and exclaimed “Aha! You and I. That would be cute.” "No, no" said Donna, “not you as you or me, but ewe like a baby lamb.” "You mean that Ewe means little sheep?” I asked. “That’s fantastic! So if Ewe stands for baby sheep, then Eye can stand for the eye of the needle!” And so our name was born. “Ewe and Eye” became the name of my business.
