I’ve been happily married for over 20 years. As my children grow older and prepare to leave the nest I chose to embark on a new career. I am a first generation American of Norwegian descent. My family has a rich tradition in knitting and needlecrafts. As a young girl I’d vacation every summer in Norway with relatives and was taught by my grandmother to do various forms of handwork. It was an unexpected but, in hindsight, a natural decision to open a yarn shop. My sister Britt and I were discussing what we wanted to do with our lives. She told me I should open a yarn shop since Sigrid’s, a local yarn shop, had just closed and left a void in the knitting community in our area. I gave it some serious thought over the next day or so and “Eva’s Yarn Shop” then started to take on a life of its own.

The series of events that took place once I made the decision have been almost surreal. The space we are in is in an historic building that had been vacant for a while. My husband Drew and I called the realtor on a Sunday, saw the space on Monday and had a proposal for the landlord the next day. The Masonic Lodge owns the building and they meet once a month so we had to get our proposal in immediately. They liked my ideas and the rest is history. The store has undergone a beautiful transformation and is a showplace in the center of Fairhaven. Drew’s expertise as a builder helped to turn my shop into a bright, fun and exciting place to go to work every day.

The process of renovating, buying stock and all the other details that go along with opening a new shop has been an eye opening experience. I am so blessed to have had great friends who stood by me through the whole process. Eli Syre, the owner of Sigrids, gave me a wealth of information and advice. She told me there were no downsides to owning a yarn shop and she was so right. My mom Berit Tveit and her sister Sigrun Tveit have made some beautiful samples for my shop. They are two of the most talented women I know and I am so grateful for their beautiful work. I can’t name everyone who helped me because I’d hate to leave someone’s name off the list. You all know who you are and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. The one person who I need to mention, however, is my husband Drew. Without his tremendous support I would not have this beautiful place. The list of all he’s done for me would be pages long. He always knows just what to say or do when I get stressed over the everyday trappings of owning a business. For that I am eternally grateful and love him with all my heart!!

I am looking forward to meeting all the knitters who come across my shop. Feel free to drop me a line.

Yours Truly,
Eva
